Tasneem (21) & Hussein (16) Al-Zaq & their family of 10
Tasneem Al-Zaq was studying engineering at Al-Azhar University in Gaza City. After October 2023, her university campus and her home were destroyed. Tasneem and her immediate family of 10 were displaced to Deir al-Balah, where they lived in a tent by the sea. Tasneem and her younger brother, Hussein, have been raising funds online to purchase food and survival necessities for their family, including their youngest sibling Abdullah, who was born during the war. In addition to supporting their family, Tasneem and Hussein use their funds to purchase and distribute food to children and elders in their encampment.
In September 2024, Tasneem and her 3 friends Nada, Hoda, and Shahad came together to launch a mutual aid team called Plant a Smile from within their displacement camp. Over 6 months, Plant a Smile organized several beautiful projects in their community, including: purchasing ingredients and preparing meals for displaced families as well as patients at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, distributing cash aid, and hosting entertainment events with music, dancing, face painting, fireworks, and sweet treats for the children. Their work facilitated survival and joy in extremely difficult circumstances.
As of February 2025, Tasneem, Hussein and their family are surviving in the ruins of their old neighborhood in Gaza City.
I personally manage the campaign pages and donations for Plant a Smile and the Al-Zaq family. Donations are deposited into a separate bank account and transferred to Tasneem or Hussein via Western Union or international wire transfer. I post all transfer receipts on the Instagram page I also manage for these campaigns.
Hamza Banar (19) & his family of 8
Hamza reached out to me a year ago for help with creating flyers for and promoting his campaign, and we have been communicating regularly since. He is from the neighborhood of Shuja'iya in Gaza City, and was planning to attend university to study design prior to October 2023. Hamza and his family were displaced and living in a tent in Deir al-Balah. He has 5 younger siblings, the youngest being 8-year-old Zainab, who also loves to create art.
Hamza has been raising funds online to support his family's survival, and he has organized mutual aid projects in their displacement camp, distributing food to other families and children. Currently, Hamza and his family rely on donations to survive the worsening crisis and rent an apartment (which costs around $500 a month) so they do not have to live on the streets.
Mohammed M. Al Sharif (29), his 4 nieces and family
Mohammed is a good friend of a friend of my cousin, which was how I learned about his story and fundraiser. Since October 2023, Mohammed has survived the destruction of his home and taxi business, as well as the sudden loss of his brother to a heart attack. Mohammed has since been caring for his brother's family of 4 daughters. On his Instagram page, he has shared updates and documentation of life in beseiged Gaza.
Update from Mohammed on 3/19/25: "After months of unimaginable horror, I have finally made it to Egypt. I didn’t leave because I wanted to—I left because I had no choice. My sister is battling cancer, and without her medication, I could lose her. We evacuated with nothing. No belongings, no certainty, just the desperate hope that I can save her life. But I can’t do this alone. I need your help. I need to get her the medicine she needs before it’s too late. Please, if you can help in any way—by donating, sharing, or even just spreading the word—it could mean the difference between life and death. She has already endured so much. She shouldn’t have to fight this battle alone. Please stand with us."
The Sanabel Team
The Sanabel Team is a Palestinian-led mutual aid team of volunteers founded in 2018 by activist Osama in Khan Younis. Through the past year, The Sanabel Team has expanded and worked tirelessly daily to cook and provide food, source clean water, build tents for living, teaching, and worship, provide clothing/blankets and other essential living supplies, and provide rent and cash assistance to displaced families throughout the Gaza Strip, as well as in Egypt.
Healing Our Homeland
Healing Our Homeland is a "Palestinian woman-led, volunteer-run, grassroots movement of liberation and healing." They manage numerous initiatives: purchasing aid from within the Gaza Strip and distributing daily to families, sponsoring families who have evacuated through the Rafah border to Egypt, legal/bail funds in Central Florida, and Hygeine Kits for Gaza in partnership with Muslim Women's Safety Coalition.
Gaza's Roots
Gaza's Roots is a team of Palestinians in and out of Gaza. They organize a Food Program, Newborn Care Program, and Housing Program throughout the Gaza Strip.
Connecting Humanity
Palestinians in Gaza are relying on eSIMs (virtual SIM cards) to keep their phones connected despite ongoing telecommunication blackouts.
Connecting Humanity (gazaesims.com) provides donated eSIMs to journalists, medical professionals, aid workers, and people who rely on eSIMs to stay in contact with their families and friends, to document and share what is happening around them, and to stay connected to the world and each other.
Consider donating funds for eSIMs to one of the below campaigns, who are managing and streamlining the process of purchasing and sending eSIMS to Connecting Humanity:
